Spreadsheet of Treat Counts

Let's turn this little delay into a flurry of treats! The spreadsheet is editable if you want to help with data-entry, so be careful about shared-doc-etiquette.

Works are due tonight at 10pm ET! (Countdown Timer)

We have two pinch hits remaining, posted here.

Also, after taking a poll and talking to some folks, if >3 people don't have fics after the deadline, I'm going to hold the collection once for 24 hours and try another round of pinch hits. Because it is a flash exchange, I'm only going to delay the collection once, but I wanted to give people a heads up this was possible!

300bpm: (Default)
It's time for 300bpm again! This is a flash exchange where the only prompts are songs. It matches on fandom, ship, and medium with 3 allowed DNWs. This time, we are including fic, art, and vids (hey, let's try it.) 300 word minimum for fic, clean sketch on unlined paper for art, 30s of edited video.

Song Brainstorming Document.

What are signup requirements?
You match by fandom, character/pairing, and medium. We are including art and vids this time! You will have to submit a link to a song, with the title of that song. There will be optional details exclusively for three (3) DNWs and, if the song is in a non-English language, translation information. Giving translation information is optional. 3-10 requests, 4-10 offers. You may request more than one thing in the same fandom, as long as you have 3 different fandoms.

You may request more than one fandom for the same song, if you would like.

It is probably a bad idea to request only vids, given that even having vids in a flash exchange is a total experiment and I have very little idea if vidders are willing to work under these ludicrous conditions. I wanted to try it, though.

If you have multiple fandoms and ships in one request, you may not DNW a medium that you have requested for any individual one of those fandoms or ships. That will fuck up matching beyond all recognition.

How do nominations work?
The only thing you will be nominating is fandom and ship. We are using the relationship tags to incorporate both ships and single characters. You may have to disambiguate some of your ships, especially if multiple overlapping fandoms are being nominated.

For crossovers, please nominate the specific crossover. For instance, Crossover: MCU/Marvel 616. Original work should be nominated under the umbrella fandom "Original Work."

Some examples of what you can nominate:
Harry Potter & Nobody
Harry Potter/Original Eldritch Terror
Harry Potter & Hermione Granger
Harry Potter/Hermione Granger/Ron Weasley
Harry Potter (book)/ Harry Potter (movie)

Feel free to be creative with it:
All the Women in the MCU & Their Important Business
Tony Stark & His Daddy Issues
Tony Stark/His Daddy Issues

All okay!

Nominations will remain open during sign-ups this time, huh?
Yep. So be very mindful if you request or offer “any.” This exchange matches on ship, so that’s not an optional detail you can ignore. “Any” means “any in the tagset,” even if it was nominated after you signed up.

What's with those weird fandoms about "any fandom I've previously requested blah blah blah"?
In some past flash exchanges, some people have enjoyed giving their authors a lot of freedom and the ability to get inspired by different tags to go in a bunch of different directions! In this one, they can be inspired by a song. The ones that are like, "any fandom I have requested," you should be extremely cautious about offering--you'll have to write it, whether or not you know them are not. You are offering any fandom your recip has requested.

What if someone cannot be matched?
If you do not have any offers that will match anyone else, you will be deleted. If no one has offers that meet your requests, you will go out to a pinch hit and be given the option to add additional requests. Given the nature of the exchange, I cannot guarantee that everyone will have a gift by the time gifts are revealed, but I will do my best.

What counts as three (3) DNWs?
In general, please treat this sensibly. Mod reserves right as total sovereign authority to ask you to tweak them. If your fic doesn't work out for you, there is no harm in refusing the gift. The purpose of limiting DNWs is to balance the needs of people with strong DNWs with the demands of a short, casual flash exchange. Your main goal should be to as clear to your author as possible about what you do not want, since time is of the essence.

DNWs you should highly consider clarifying include but are not limited to: no gore (what do you consider gore?), no AUs (what elements of canon cannot be changed in order to avoid being classified as an AU), no unrequested ships (do parents count? do canon ships count? do background characters holding hands in the park count?), no kink (which kink?). Probably more. As much as possible, assume your author has a very different fandom context than you.

Can I submit a song without lyrics?
Yes.

Can I submit a song in a non-English language?
Yes. You may optionally submit a link to translation information in the optional details slot.

Can I submit a spoken word poem?
No.

This spoken word poem has some music behind it...

Okay, maybe. If you want to have a detailed philosophical dispute about the definition of a song, I'm down, but realistically we are following the Jacobellis v. Ohio test for obscenity: your mod knows it when she sees it and she is the sovereign with total power.

Is this a songfic exchange?
No! In fact, you can't write traditional songfic due to Ao3 terms of service. Ao3 considers the use of the full lyrics of a song to be unacceptable use of material under copyright. Their guidelines suggest that you limit any direct quotes of songs to around 10%.

In that case, how should I use the song prompt?
However you want! Does the song have some imagery that inspires you? Is it narrative and do you want to tell that story? Does it give you characterization ideas? Did they just give you "The Masochism Tango" by Tom Lehrer and can you feel the expectant leer behind the computer screen? This is a flash exchange, it is supposed to be casual and low-pressure.

How much do I have to write, draw, or vid?
300 word minimum, thus our clever name. For art, the outcome should be a nice sketch on unlined paper. For vids, the minimum is 30s.

Does my vid have to be to the requested song?
Nope! Much like the fic and art, it should be inspired by it, but it can be a response in a number of ways--a cover, a different point of view, a song riffing on a similar theme or part of the original that inspired you.

Any other requirements for posting works?
Please include what song the work was based on, ideally with a link to youtube!

Pinch hits?
Pinch hits will be sent out on 300bpm.dreamwidth.org, the Exchanges After Dark Discord server, and probably FFA too.

Who are you and how do I contact you?
I'm seinmit. Discord is the most reliable way to reach me quickly and my name is seinmit#3921. If that doesn’t work for you, my email is weltlichkeit@gmail.com. Contact me with any questions.

The next round of 300bpm will be held some weekend this upcoming November. Give your input on exactly when here.

In addition, one change to the structure I'm considering is giving each round of the collection a loose theme for the music suggested. So, for instance, my favorite idea for the November edition is "The Opposite of Holiday Music" -- to be interpreted as you wish. I'd also be open to "Holiday Music" if people want that.

It could also perhaps be a genre-- hip-hop, punk, classical. I think it'd be fun, but I'd love to hear y'all's input.

If you have thoughts on that, or any other changes to the structure, feel free to comment on this post.

Edited to add clarification:

One thing is that this will be an optional theme! You wouldn't have to justify to anyone if your prompts met it--it's more to have another way to encourage creativity and doing new things, if people want to do that. An alternative would be a bingo card that people could ask for.

And as a note, the thing that appeals to me about "The Opposite of Holiday Music" is precisely that it is absurd and indeterminate and kinda meaningless.

You could go so many weird directions with it. Is it "Fuck Christmas" music that's still basically Christmas music, like Fairytale of New York? Is it Islamic vocal music, because "Holiday" is a not-so-subtle appeal to Christian values that leaves a lot of people out and you want to make a point by drawing attention to the excluded? Is it the Avinu Malkeinu, making a point that the "holidays" meant here are not actually the High Holy Days? Is it even, within Christianity, an Easter hymn because it isn't even actually the most important Christian holiday? Is it screaming metal music, because the tone so different? Is it music about quotidian daily life, because a normal day is the opposite of a holiday? Is it aggressively secular music, because holiday evokes "holy day"? And so on.

I'm getting the feedback that people don't like the absurdity/specificity, though, so I hear you! Thank you so much for taking the time to give me your thoughts as I muse over this question.
